Practical workflow
Turn grocery receipts into a simple spending check
Use a few real receipts to spot where the grocery total is going without building a spreadsheet first.
What this helps you do
Households curious about grocery patterns before deciding whether detailed budgeting is worth the effort.
What you need
- Several recent grocery receipts or item lists
- Optional categories you care about
Do it step by step
- 1
Photograph or upload a small batch of receipts after removing payment details or loyalty/account identifiers you do not want to share.
- 2
Ask AI to categorize items into useful buckets such as produce, meat, dairy, pantry, snacks, drinks, household, and prepared foods.
- 3
Have it total each category and mark any receipt line it cannot confidently interpret.
- 4
Look for repeat purchases, convenience items, or categories that surprise you rather than asking AI to judge what you 'should' buy.
- 5
Choose one experiment for the next shopping trip and compare again later if it is useful.

Use these grocery receipts to give me a simple spending check. Categorize items into produce, meat/seafood, dairy, pantry, snacks, drinks, prepared foods, household, and other. Total each category, mark any line you cannot read confidently, and point out the biggest repeat patterns. Do not shame or label purchases 'bad.' End with 3 realistic experiments I could try if I want to lower the total.
What a good result looks like
A rough but useful picture of where grocery money is going and one or two changes worth testing.
Tips and watch-outs
- Receipt OCR can be wrong; verify the big totals and any surprising line items.
- Remove payment-card information and unrelated identifiers before uploading receipts.
