The best AI uses are often the boring ones

Forget the robot-future stuff for a minute. A confusing bill, five school emails, two contractor estimates, or the pile of tasks in your head may be a much better place to start.

Start smaller than the AI hype

A lot of AI conversation starts with enormous questions: What jobs will disappear? Do I need an agent? Which model is winning? What will everything look like in five years? Those can be interesting questions, but they are not especially helpful when it is 7:40 p.m. and you are staring at three school messages, a bill you do not understand, and a refrigerator full of ingredients that somehow still do not look like dinner.

Everyday AI gets more useful when the question changes from “What can this technology become?” to “What annoying little piece of information work would I rather not do myself right now?”

That is why some of the best first uses feel almost disappointingly ordinary. You already have the information. You mostly know what a good answer should look like. The annoying part is reading, sorting, comparing, rewriting, or getting started.

A useful phrase

Information friction is the gap between having the information and having it in a form you can actually use.

Look for transformations, not magic tricks

One easy way to spot a good AI task is to look for a transformation. The raw material already exists; you just want it changed into a more useful shape.

  • Long → short: several school emails into one checklist.
  • Messy → organized: a brain dump into a realistic day plan.
  • Different → comparable: two contractor estimates into the same categories.
  • Confusing → understandable: a bill into plain-English questions for the provider.
  • Rough → usable: scattered notes into an email you would actually send.

Notice what is missing from that list: “Ask AI to run my entire life.” You can get plenty of value before handing anything important over to automation.

Boring tasks are unusually good training wheels

A mundane task often has exactly the properties you want while you are learning how much to trust an AI assistant.

  • The source is right in front of you, so you can check whether the AI invented or missed something.
  • You understand the goal well enough to recognize a useful result.
  • A bad first answer is usually cheap and reversible: correct it, clarify the request, or ignore it.
  • The finish line is concrete. You wanted a checklist, comparison, explanation, draft, or plan — not a vague demonstration of intelligence.

This is also where you learn the part of AI use that matters more than memorizing clever prompts: the first answer is allowed to be mediocre. Tell the assistant what it got wrong, add the missing constraint, and make the next answer better.

Keep the final judgment where it belongs

“AI can help with this” does not mean “AI should decide this.” A contractor comparison can expose missing scope without choosing a contractor for you. A bill explanation can help you prepare questions without proving the charge is wrong. A household-photo workflow can help you decide what to inspect first without replacing a qualified repair or safety professional.

The higher the consequence of being wrong, the more useful it is to separate preparation from decision-making. Let AI do the heavy reading, organizing, comparison, or question generation. Then check the consequential facts and make the decision yourself.

Use AI to make the next decision easier. Do not confuse that with letting AI make every decision.

Try one thing today

Do not make yourself invent an “AI project.” Look at something already mildly irritating you: an overlong message, notes you keep postponing, a few choices you need to compare, a document you keep rereading, or a task pile that has not turned into a plan.

Give your AI assistant the real material if it is appropriate to share. Tell it the transformation you want. Ask it not to invent missing facts. Then inspect the result like a draft, not a verdict.

If that saves ten boring minutes and gives you a clearer next step, it counts. You do not have to become an AI person. The technology can simply become one more useful thing you know how to reach for.
